Instead of looking at individual products, Market Trends allows you to look at averages across the board. This is important as you’re researching, because you’re not just going to be competing with one product… you will compete will all sellers in this market.

Other tools are going to show you snapshots of estimated monthly sales for individual products, based on one moment in time. This is actually pretty dangerous. Sales could be mis-represented in these cases, because of seasonality or an unusual spike in sales. For example, looking at the Market Trends data for Candy Canes shows us that there’s a HUGE spike in sales for December. So if you were looking to source this product during this peak season, the sales would be astronomical. But Market Intelligence shows us that sales dip way low during the “off-season”, which is a majority of the year.

This graph will show the estimated sales from up to the past two years, indicating months where the product picked up in sales as well as months when sales were a bit slower.

The average price over the past 90 days will show the percentage price change during the past 90 days. If this is a pretty drastic decrease, that may be an indicator of the top sellers dropping their prices and crushing their margins. If that’s the case, that would be a red flag for that product market.

Then, you’ll see the best selling period, which will indicate when this product was at its best over the course of the past couple of years. This can be one single month or a specific time period, such as September.

Next, you’ll see the rate of review increase per month. This can sometimes be a negative number, which shows that there are lots of brand new products among the top sellers, and that may be an indication that the market may become saturated with new sellers. But basically, this metric is showing how the reviews among the top sellers each month are changing.

The final metric you will see is the year of year sales trend. This metric evaluates as a %, which is the difference in sales now versus this time last year.
